Re:  Supplemental Learning, Technology for Those Who Need It, Food For Those Who Need It, Medication Collection

Dear Parents and Guardians,

With the beginning of a new week, we want to be sure that students have options for supplemental learning activities.  Teachers have populated Google Classrooms with engaging ideas to keep the learning going this week.

Please see the links below (or print the attachments) to help a PK-5 student log in to a Google Classroom.  6-12 students are active Google Classroom users already.

We are working hard to clear hurdles to try to move to distance learning, which is now also called Interim Learning Opportunities.  What is the difference between the two?

 Supplemental versus Distance Learning Chart

As we have new, straightforward information about Interim Learning Opportunities from the State, we will send updates. Please check your email daily this week.

Additionally, if you indicated that you would need a laptop or internet hotspot to access online supplemental learning or Interim Learning Opportunities, we will be deploying that technology outside of Old Saybrook Central Office (50 Sheffield Street) from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.  Please come prepared to sign the waiver document.   Internet hotspots are extremely limited (due to nationwide availability), so please do not borrow one unless you do not have access to the internet in any other way.  If you have flu-like symptoms, please do not come to the school. If you can’t make it to this pick-up opportunity, please call 860-395-3157, extension 3010.

Also, we are working to meet the nutritional needs of students in Old Saybrook.  If you have need of free breakfast and lunch for children under the age of 18 you will soon have access to it at either Goodwin School or Old Saybrook High School between the hours of 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. while school is closed, starting as soon as approval for the District’s plan is received. Please check your email for the official start date. If you do not want to access free meals, please click here and opt-out.  We are asking that everyone who does not wish to access this opportunity respond to the survey.  This will keep us from wasting food, so we will have more available for those who need it. If you have flu-like symptoms, please do not come to the school.

Parents/Guardians who wish to pick up medication that has been left with the nurse may do so tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17.  The schedule for pick up is:

                             Goodwin:  11:00 to 12:00

                             OSMS:  12:30 to 1:30

                              OSHS:  2:00 to 3:00

If you cannot make it to the schools at that time, our nursing director, Karen vanderHorst will call you to work out another plan.  If you have flu-like symptoms, please do not come to the school.  English Accessing Supplemental Materials-3.pdf

Many of you have reached out to ask questions, share information, and offer help.  Thank you! Because we want to get back to you and we are very involved in coordinating and executing plans, please use the following email, ClosureQuestions@oldsaybrookschools.org and a staff member will route your question to the appropriate person to assist you.

This situation is very fluid, and we may receive new directions soon. We are trying to accomplish many tasks before any changes come.

There is a special Board of Education meeting scheduled for March 17, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. Please take care of each other.

We know that some of you are facing difficult decisions about work and childcare. We join all the other voices of elected officials and medical experts who are advising social distancing.  Children want to gather together, and they crave social interaction.   Please strongly discourage the gathering of children (and adults) in the coming weeks.

Next Update:  March 17, 2020

--to include additional information about items in this email and any updates we receive from Emergency Management, the State, or other sources.

Please take care of yourself and your loved ones.
