Old Saybrook, Conn., September 26, 2023 – After more than ten years as the Superintendent of Old Saybrook Public Schools, Jan Perruccio, the 2023 Connecticut Superintendent of the Year, will retire from her position.
Jan Perruccio began her career in Old Saybrook in 2013, coming from Wallingford Public Schools as their Assistant Superintendent. Over the course of Superintendent Perruccio’s tenure, she has implemented two District Strategic Plans, with the current plan focusing on equity and high-quality instruction within a safe and supportive learning environment for students and staff. All efforts related to the District’s Strategic Plan are thoroughly documented and available to the public on the District’s Strategic Plan Page, a project overseen by Mrs. Perruccio to increase transparency, accountability, and public understanding of the District’s goals.
“I am excited to look to the future after such a successful and happy decade, but I can't even begin to talk about how sad I am to leave Old Saybrook Public Schools,” said Superintendent Perruccio about her impending departure. “I have enjoyed working with a very professional and supportive Board of Education, a dedicated administrative team, talented teachers and staff, and the most outstanding students and families. Old Saybrook is a gem, and I feel fortunate to have worked here.”
While the last decade has seen many challenges, not the least of which being the COVID-19 pandemic, Superintendent Perruccio has found ways to turn difficult times into opportunities to improve the District. For example, Old Saybrook Public Schools managed to transition to a one-to-one computer-to-student program, providing every student in the District with a new chromebook or Ipad. Funds made available by the state were also used to begin building projects to improve HVAC units at each of the schools in the District. The air conditioning project for Kathleen E. Goodwin School was completed over the summer and was ready for the first day of school. Athletic field improvements, curricular program development and refinement, and numerous awards and accolades have been bestowed on the District during this time.
“Words cannot describe the profound sadness I felt when Mrs. Perruccio informed me that she would be retiring in the spring as Superintendent of Schools,” said Board of Education Chairman Trevor Nichols. “Since her arrival almost 11 years ago, she has dedicated her life to Old Saybrook Public Schools and everyone has benefited. This is a huge loss for the Old Saybrook community. She is a “once-in-a-generation” person who simply cannot be replaced. Please join me in congratulating Jan on her retirement as she begins the next chapter in her life!”
In addition to her position as Superintendent of Schools, Jan Perruccio also served on a number of regional and state-level committees and organizations including the Middlesex Shoreline Superintendents Association, the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents Executive Board of Directors, and the Central Connecticut State University Advisory Board.
