Curriculum Director Wins Literacy Award

OLD SAYBROOK PUBLIC SCHOOLS NEW CURRICULUM DIRECTOR, KHARY FLETCHER, IS HONORED BY THE CONNECTICUT READING ASSOCIATION WITH THE OUTSTANDING ADMINISTRATOR LITERACY AWARD

OLD SAYBROOK, CT (March 6, 2023) – The Connecticut Reading Association has named Khary Fletcher as this year’s recipient of the Outstanding Administrator Literacy Award. Mr. Fletcher has been awarded for his work in literacy as the Director of Humanities for Hartford Public Schools. At their meeting on December 19, 2022, the Old Saybrook Board of Education officially selected Mr. Fletcher to become the District’s new Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

The Connecticut Reading Association is a professional literacy organization and the state affiliate of the international Literacy Association. Each year, this group selects an administrator who has effectively motivated, inspired, and supported others in the promotion of literacy. Additionally, the group looks for someone who upholds literacy equity and actively works to remove barriers to academic success through administrative efforts.

Mr. Fletcher was nominated for the award by several colleagues and was ultimately chosen from a competitive pool of applicants by the Connecticut Reading Association Awards Committee.

When asked about his body of work and how he hopes to build on his success in Old Saybrook, Mr. Fletcher said, “My focus has always been to partner with teachers as the first point of contact for students. Diverse texts help students connect to material through both a social and cultural lens while also helping to build empathy for others. I want to continue that work for our students in Old Saybrook and provide our teachers with professional development that will help them meet the needs of our students.”

Superintendent Perruccio felt that the award further validated Mr. Fletcher’s recent appointment as Old Saybrook’s Director of Curriculum, stating, “It is wonderful to see Mr. Fletcher recognized by such a prestigious group. It affirms the Old Saybrook Public Schools team’s perspective about him as he was going through the interview process and confirms our respect for his work with us so far.”

The mission of the Connecticut Reading Association is to empower educators, inspire students, and encourage communities to embrace literacy as an essential tool for lifelong success. The banquet to officially honor Mr. Fletcher’s achievement will be held on Tuesday, May 23, in Glastonbury, Connecticut.
